Firebase Maholic

Camp Gecko

Firebase Maholic was formed out of a compound used by Mullah Mohammed Omar as his living quarters. Located outside of Kandahar the original compound was constructed in 1996 reportedly with the some of the construction costs being shouldered by Osama bin Laden. The compound itself sprawling and luxurious according to the Special Forces soldiers that were inhabiting it as of February 2007. There's a cafeteria with doublewide fireplace, a two tiered fountain with catfish and a swimming pool. The Army Special Forces soldiers stationed there set up a shooting range and use the compound for mission planning, there were also a number of elite Canadian soldiers stationed there and American forces use the camp to help train Afghan National Police.

The complex was first called Camp Gecko. It was renamed Firebase Maholic after Master Sergeant Thomas Maholic, of Bradford, Pennsylvania, was killed in Kandahar province's Panjwayi district in June, 2006.
